Amman - An MA thesis debated at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) has concluded that coverage of violence is a key part of daily news content on a number of Jordanian news websites. The coverage reached around 28.8% of the items that they published.
The study, prepared by Noor Abu Zaid to earn the MA degree under the title "Coverage of Jordanian News Websites of Violence 2016-Content Analysis," showed that the news websites in question published news not attributed to sources by 45%, thus suggesting a low level of accuracy and credibility in the published material.
The study also concluded that more than 29% of press items that cover news of violence on those websites contained ethical or legal violations or both. Around 1,414 news items out of a total of 4,820 items on violence were repeated.
The study aimed at identifying the extent of commitment of Jordanian news websites to the ethical and legal rules that govern reporting on news of violence through analyzing the content of three news websites by using a systematic random sample, based on a repeated cycle, in 2016.
The debate committee comprised Dr. Hilmi Sari as an external member, Professor Basim Tweissi, Dr. Jean Karam, and Dr. Sakher Khasawneh, who supervised the study.
