6 Nov. 2017

Amman- An MA thesis submitted by Dana Ziadat, titled "Handling Corruption Cases in Jordanian Electronic Press: Study of Content Analysis" and debated at the Jordan Media Institute, has revealed that coverage of local news websites of corruption cases was around 12%, compared with other public issues.

The study also concluded that local news websites showed interest in covering cases of bribery and petty corruption by 33% of their coverage of various news related to corruption.

The study aimed at identifying the features of coverage of corruption cases in the Jordanian electronic press in terms of volume, subjects, objectives, function, and active forces, as well as the legal handling of coverage of corruption cases through analyzing the content of four Jordanian news websites for 2016.

The study indicated that there was diversity in the subjects of corruption cases covered by the electronic press, with focus on some subjects. The press was mostly inclined to cover general corruption issues and affairs without elaborating on types of corruption.

The study, supervised by Professor Basim Tweissi, concluded that "following corruption in the media" was the main aim of the press coverage. It accounted for almost half of the coverage of the monitored news websites in this respect. "Awareness-raising and education" came second, while "revealing corruption for the first time" came third.

The debate committee comprised Dr. Amani Jarrar, Dr. Jean Karam, and Dr. Sakher Khasawneh.
