Tuesday January 28th 2014

Today marks the beginning of a training workshop entitled “Reporting Human Rights Violations” at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI). The three day workshop comes as part of the activities organised in the context of the project “Uncovering Human Rights Violations Through Media” which is sponsored by the Australian Agency for International Development AusAID and in cooperation with the Australian Embassy in Amman.

In the opening speech, Dr. Basim Tweissi, JMI Dean, explained that JMI is working on a plan to develop journalists’ capabilities in covering human rights issues. This plan includes a number of projects and programmes, one of which is the launch of a website for journalists that is specialized in human rights affairs as well as issuing printed training manuals. He added that JMI also provides journalism training programmes that cover human rights issues and laws, stating that the Arab and Jordanian media society is in need of rehabilitation and capacity building in this field now more than ever before.

This workshop, which is the first in a series to be held in 2014, targets a number of journalists, media and journalism university students as well as civil society organization representatives. It highlights the important role of journalism and journalists in establishing human rights concepts, in addition to defining the professional ethics of covering human rights affairs, and their implementation through case studies and simulation.

The workshop tackles two major topics, which are foreign labour and Syrian refugees. The first day will address the legal aspects, the laws and legislations and the rights and obligations related to the mentioned categories living in Jordan. As for the second day, the participants will develop story features and will be trained on interview processes, the matters to be considered when interviewing these cases, as well as training on specialized writing with multiple examples and exercises. The third day will include conducting interviews with two actual cases of the groups mentioned above, and creating the story framework as well.

JMI will be holding two more workshops on the same topic in Irbid and Karak during the months of February and March 2014.
This workshop comes in line with the Jordan Media Institute’s goal of providing specialized training programmes in Journalism to expand the knowledge base of journalists and students and help to develop their skills using latest technologies.
