12 May 2015

The Jordan Media Institute, in cooperation with UNICEF, held a two-day workshop on 11-12 May on “Ethical and Responsible Reporting on Children’s Issues in Jordan”.

The workshop by British experts was attended by 30 journalists from various print, broadcast and electronic media as well as representatives from civil society organizations. It stressed the need for journalists to understand children, listen to their views and include them in reports affecting their lives.

The trainers pointed out the high level of complexity in dealing with children and major responsibility that falls on a reporter interviewing a child. They noted the importance of knowing the child’s age prior to interviewing him or her and drafting the questions accordingly. They also emphasized the legal, professional and ethical considerations to guarantee child protection.

UNICEF Jordan Representative, Robert Jenkins, said that an effective and engaged media encourages debate about critical issues related to children and gives a voice to young people. “That's why it's important to partner with the Jordan Media Institute to promote high quality, ethical and responsible reporting on children”, he added

The workshop is in line with JMI’s objectives to conduct specialized training for media professionals, in collaboration with international organizations, to raise their skills and the standards of the profession.
