What does JMI offer?

Jordan Media Institute is an educational institution working to enhance the performance of professionals currently employed in the journalism and media field in Jordan and the Arab region, as well as those seeking to enter this profession. The institute realizes this goal by providing advanced education and training opportunities.

JMI also seeks to improve media output and boost the profession’s reputation and image locally and regionally by offering various projects, research programs and training courses for media professionals. When does enrollment for the MA program start?

Applications are typically accepted between early April and late June every year.

How can I enroll in the MA program and what documents are required?

Applicants can fill out the paper form and submit it at the JMI headquarters, send it by mail with the required documents, or email it to y.kofreini@jmi.edu.jo. Alternatively, an online form is available on the JMI website.

Are applications accepted without all the required documents?

The required documents may be prepared and submitted in installments, provided that they are completed before the deadline for receiving applications.

What are the application fees and how can they be paid?

Are applications given priority in acceptance according to their submission dates?

The application date is not relevant when considering admission to the JMI’s MA program.

Is there is a maximum ceiling for applications, after which they are no longer accepted?

There is no specific figure for applications to enroll in the MA program. JMI retains its right to limit the number of submitted applications.

Should students wishing to apply for the JMI Master’s program be holders of specific Bachelor’s degree specializations?

Any student with a Bachelor’s in one of the knowledge fields can apply to the MA program, on condition that the degree was earned from a recognized university with a regular system of attendance.

Are applications accepted from students with a “satisfactory” GPA in the Bachelor’s program?

The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA score of “good”. However, within specific conditions and in special cases, students with a “satisfactory” GPA rating may be accepted. For more details, please click here.

Which nationalities are eligible to apply for the JMI Master’s program?

JMI accepts Jordanian and Arab applicants from the media and other academic and professional fields, in addition to Arab-speaking foreigners.

What are the MA program fees?

The total cost for the Master’s program in Journalism and New Media is 14,000 Jordanian dinars. JMI also offers partial scholarships to students in accordance with specific terms and conditions.

Why are the fees high compared with other universities in Jordan?

This is because the program’s cost is high, as it is a practical one. The institute has a distinguished faculty and experienced administrative and technical staff, and supplies students with all the necessary equipment and practical training.

What is the breakdown of the fees per credit hour, term registration and other payments?

The overall cost of the program is JD14,000, paid in installments at the beginning of every semester as per the terms governing the student’s registration.

Can the fees be paid in monthly installments and not in a lump sum at the beginning of every semester?

In certain cases, fees can be paid in installments upon approval by the JMI administration.

How can students receive scholarships?

JMI offers scholarships according to specific allocation criteria, such as admission test results and the student’s financial considerations.

Who offers scholarships for JMI students?

Various entities from the public and private sectors offer donations and scholarships for students, which JMI distributes according to specific standards and criteria.

How much do students with partial scholarships have to pay?

JMI offers partial scholarships ranging from 45% to 95%. Students pay the balance according to the scholarship amount.

Do students have to pay specific fees or penalties if scholarship conditions are violated?

Yes, these vary according to the conditions of the student’s scholarship and the nature of the violation.

Can students with ample financial resources apply for scholarships?

Scholarship conditions stipulate that students must provide proof of their inability to pay the MA program tuition fees.

When are the written tests and interviews conducted?

Written tests and interviews are held between mid-July and mid-August of each year.

What topics are covered by the written tests?

Written tests subjects include article writing, general knowledge, current events and computers.

Do previous experience and Bachelor’s degree specializations help in passing admission tests?

Knowledge of basic writing skills and culture are assessed in general, therefore BA specializations or experience do not play a part in passing these tests.

Are there fees for the tests?

No fees are charged for JMI admission tests.

Who writes and corrects the test papers?

An internal committee of experts and academics at JMI drafts and corrects the test papers.

What is the passing grade for the tests?

Student are required to score 30 out of 60 points allocated for the written tests to pass and qualify for the interview.

When are the test results released?

The results are announced between one week and ten days after the test. The list of successful students is posted on the JMI website and they are also notified by email.

Where are written tests and interviews conducted? Can they be organized outside Jordan for applicants who cannot be present on the scheduled dates?

Admission tests are held at JMI headquarters in Amman. In special cases, depending on the number of non-Jordanian applicants and JMI capabilities, they can be held outside Jordan in the applicants’ countries of residence.

How many times are admission tests held?

Tests are held only once during each admission season and cannot be postponed or repeated for any reason.

How many points are awarded to interviews?

Twenty points are allocated out of 100 (the full grade for admission tests).

How is the interview date scheduled?

JMI sets the interview dates and applicants are informed three days in advance.

What is the focus of the interview?

Applicants are assessed on general knowledge, character, resume, skills and whether they fit with the program.

Can the interview be held online or over the phone?

Interviews can be held online or over the phone in certain cases, based on the circumstances of the applicant. Acceptance in these cases is subject to JMI’s discretion.

Can I apply to enroll in the program at my expense and pay the fees in full without applying for the tests?

No student can enroll in the JMI Master’s program without passing the admission tests.

Does JMI provide transportation?

No. However, JMI is located off the Airport Road behind the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and therefore accessible by public transport.

Does the graduation certificate awarded by the University of Jordan mean that I am a UJ graduate?

The University of Jordan makes graduation decisions upon the recommendation of JMI; therefore, students are graduates of both the UJ and JMI.

Can I go on to study for my doctorate based on JMI’s Master’s degree?

Yes, as the MA degree is awarded by JMI and the UJ Graduate Studies Faculty.

Do scholarship students have any obligations to JMI after graduating from the MA program?

No, students have no obligations to JMI after graduation.

Does JMI secure jobs for graduating students?

No, but the institute provides them with training opportunities, and helps the graduates in introducing them to work opportunities through its network of relations.

How does JMI conduct its recruitment and selection process?

JMI invites the largest possible number of applications and recruits qualified personnel using diverse means, such as publishing advertisements in various outlets. The Human Resources Department reviews the applications and shortlists candidates based on the experience and skills required for the vacancies. It then asks the most qualified candidates to do written tests and/or interviews.

How does JMI advertise its vacancies?

JMI advertises its vacancies on its website under the “Jobs” tab and on its social media portals.

How can one view the details of the job opportunities?

JMI publishes the details of its available positions, including employment terms and conditions, required tasks and application methods, on its website under the “Jobs” tab, where all information on the job is listed under its title.

How can one submit a job application to JMI?

When a vacancy occurs, the application process is announced on JMI’s website under the “Jobs” tab. Applicants may review all the information relevant to the vacancy by clicking on the title.

Even if there are no vacancies, you may send an application with your updated resume to hr@jmi.edu.jo, making sure to mention your field of specialty and experience in the “Subject” of the e-mail. The Human Resources Department reviews these applications when a new position becomes available and contacts the applicants with the skills and experience required for that vacancy.

Does JMI respond to job applicants?

All job applications sent to hr@jmi.edu.job will receive a response confirming JMI’s receipt of the document. JMI only contacts applicants when it needs additional information on their skills or if they are selected to participate in written tests and/or interviews for specific vacancies.

Does JMI offer training courses?

JMI offers three types of training courses and workshops: Courses held periodically by the institute; courses conducted upon request and based on the number of trainees, which are advertised on JMI website; and courses executed by JMI as part of the projects implemented by its partners.

Who can register for JMI courses?

Anyone wishing to improve existing skills and/or acquire new skills in journalism, media and information literacy, communications and public relations can register for courses offered by the institute. A minimum level of related knowledge is a prerequisite for certain specialized and advanced training courses.

What topics do the training courses cover?

JMI offers a diverse range of training courses on journalism and media (print media, audiovisual media, digital media, media and communications, as well as public relations for companies and institutions). The courses vary from beginner to advanced training levels.

How long is the training course?

The duration of training courses varies according to the topic and practical requirements. Typically, they range from four to eight weeks.

What are the fees for a training course?

Fees for a training course depend on the number of applicants and are calculated to cover its costs only. Certain courses are also available free of charge as JMI is a not-for-profit institute.

Do trainees need to buy any equipment or devices for the training?

No, since JMI provides all the necessary training equipment, tools and supplies at the institute.

Do trainees have to be present daily during the course?

Yes. In order to complete the course successfully and receive a certificate, trainees must attend all training days.

Does JMI issue training certificates?

Yes. Trainees receive an accredited JMI certificate when the course ends. For some advanced courses and training diplomas, JMI grants certificates that are also accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Who conducts the training?

JMI has qualified trainers in all journalism and media spheres. The institute also hosts experienced trainers from the Arab world and beyond as per the requirements of each training course.
