The Jordan Media Institute organized the third training workshop under the title “Reporting Human Rights Violations” in Karak. This workshop came as part of the activities organized in the context of the project “Uncovering Human Rights Violations Through Media”, sponsored by the Australian Agency for International Development AusAID and in cooperation with the Australian Embassy in Amman.

The workshop focused on the role of journalism and journalists in covering human rights issues, as well as building their capabilities in this field. It also highlighted two main topics; the street protests in Jordan and freedom of expression as examples on covering human rights cases.

The workshop targeted 15 journalists from the southern provinces who work in different media institutions including Jordan News Agency (Petra), Jordan Radio and Television Corporation (JRTV), Ro’ya Television and Sawt Al-Karak Radio.

The 3-day workshop discussed the legal aspects and the laws related to covering protests, freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and demonstration. It also included several practical exercises, such as performing a demonstration and a press conference, in addition to creating a story framework.

“Organizing training workshops in the southern and northern provinces in Jordan is a groundbreaking step, as these areas have an enormous number of important and neglected stories to be reported”, said trainer Saddam Abu Azzam from the National Centre for Human Rights.
