Jordan Media Institute (JMI) was buzzing with activity this week with several meetings and workshops taking place at the academic facility serving students, journalists and youth.<br />

The week opened on Sunday, 6 December 2015 with a meeting to discuss ways to empower Arab youth with communication and advocacy training. Representatives from JMI, Anna Lindh Foundation (ALF) and UNESCO were joined by eight young Arab leaders from Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Algeria, Lebanon and Libya. The two-day meeting discussed training models for a wider regional training program in February that is part of the EU-funded Debate to Action project being implemented by ALF and UNESCO’s NET-MED Youth. <br />

JMI students were treated to a workshop on photojournalism by Norwegian photojournalist Tom Egil who helped them understand how to tell stories through photos and how to seek natural light and how best to utilize it in confined places. This was Egil’s third workshop at JMI in as many years, and the result of a long-term partnership with the Norwegian Institute of Journalism which also includes organizing academic trips for JMI students to Norway.<br />

While in another classroom, 15 journalists from different Jordanian media outlets received training on covering news during times of conflict. The sessions were in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross whose members briefed journalists on the International Humanitarian Law, the latest fighting techniques, prohibited weapons and electronic wars. The participants also heard from other journalists who shared their experience in covering wars and disasters. <br />
