25 Feb. 2018

ِAmman- Pan Weifang, Chinese ambassador to Jordan, said that his country does not set political preconditions for supporting Jordan and does not impose its political views, programs, and positions on other countries in return for that support.

In a lecture he delivered at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) titled "Jordanian and Arab-Chinese Relations," the ambassador added that Jordan has special relations with China as it is considered Jordan's second largest trading partner. Also, special economic relations have reflected on all levels, especially tourism exchange between the two countries recently.

On the economic projects financed by China, the ambassador said that his country finances a number of important and vital projects in the Kingdom, including the oil shale project as China has contributed around $1.6 billion out of a total cost of $2.2 billion. China also supports the establishment of a peaceful nuclear reactor for the purpose of producing energy in Jordan. It further contributes to infrastructure and renewable energy projects and future projects like the Red Sea-Dead Sea canal, the Basra-Aqaba pipeline, and a number of industrial projects.

Pan Weifang noted that China is a moderate country and that it seeks to expand its relations with Jordan by providing humanitarian aid to Syrian refugees in the Kingdom and exploring greater economic potentials, especially since Jordan can serve as a hub for reconstruction in Syria and Iraq once the war is over.

On the Palestine question, the ambassador said that "Beijing always sides by just causes of peoples and can play a greater role in the peace process due to the good relations that it has with the Palestinians and Israelis. Therefore, China can be a good broker to reach the two-state solution."

The ambassador attributed China's economic success to good management and working enthusiastically and seriously in the stage of reform and openness, which started almost 40 years ago. China has managed to develop, move from one economic system to another, achieve sustainable development, and transfer international technological experiences. It managed to build a strong economy, which has become the world's second largest economy after the United States.

However, the ambassador noted that "despite economic prosperity, China is suffering from the consequences of economic progress, including pollution, traffic, low quality of some Chinese products, the high cost of Chinese labor compared with other East Asian countries, and foodstuff security. There are also significant economic differences between the eastern and western parts of the country."

JMI students and the Chinese ambassador had an expanded discussion afterward. He pointed out that support for North Korea is purely humanitarian, indicating that Beijing "supports international resolutions on Pyongyang and rejects the proliferation of nuclear weapons despite the fact that it has not signed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. The Chinese nuclear bomb is for self-defense. China has repeatedly announced that it will be the last to use this bomb under all circumstances."

Pan Weifang is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He has extensive political and diplomatic experience derived from his long diplomatic career since 1977. He worked at the Chinese Foreign Ministry and was posted in a number of countries. He served as ambassador to Slovakia and Oman previously.
