23 Apr. 2018
Fifteen journalists from a number of governorates took part in an interactive training workshop on coverage of children issues. This is the second workshop held by the Jordan Media Institute (JMI), with the support of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), within the "Makani" project for journalists to "enhance the quality of reporting on protecting children against violence in Jordan."

The three-day workshop aims at developing journalism that is specialized in child rights and enabling journalists to cover the issues of children and their families in a professional manner that considers the ethics of journalistic work.

Nadine Nimri, a journalist specializing in child rights and adviser in the "Makani" project, said that "the issue with journalism that is concerned with the rights of the child is not only that it is limited, but it also has to do with its quality." The "Makani" project is seeking to build journalism based on a child-rights approach to contribute to awareness-raising and protecting the child in press reporting.

She added that "the project includes a number of seminars and training workshops that target new journalists to create awareness of issues of the child. The aim is to have a group of young journalists all over the Kingdom who are interested in this field so as to bring about a qualitative shift in press coverage."

Thirty journalists from Aqaba, Maan, Karak, Madaba, and Zarqa took part in the two workshops. At the end of the workshop, the participants are asked to do a press report or urgent news story related to issues of the child.

The JMI and UNICEF will launch a competition for the "best press report on issues of children" for 2018 to raise awareness and highlight child journalism. This is also meant to encourage the participants to apply the journalistic skills that they acquired in the training workshops.

It is to be noted that the JMI has started receiving applications for the MA program of Journalism and New Media for 2018/2019. It will continue to receive applications until 6 July. For more information, please visit the JMI website, www.jmi.edu.jo, or call the following numbers: + 962 6 5713304/6.
