16 May 2018
Amman- The Jordan Media Institute (JMI), in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth, has concluded the training of 440 young men and women from different governorates in the Kingdom within "the project of building the capacities of youth in handling media" (Media Literacy). The program is carried out in cooperation with GIZ and with funding from the EU.

The project included the implementation of 22 training programs at 22 youth centers affiliated with the Ministry of Youth in the 12 governorates of the Kingdom by eight training teams that are specialized in media literacy.

The project aimed at training young men and women aged 16-25 from the members of the youth centers on understanding communication and contemporary media and eradicating news and digital illiteracy.

JMI Dean Dr. Basim Tweissi said that the JMI targeted youth in the governorates in this project and managed to prove its ability to implement training programs efficiently and professionally in different places. This is part of the JMI's responsibility for serving local communities and youth groups that are away from city centers. He pointed out that work to disseminate the concepts of media literacy is still in its beginning. Youth communities need more such programs.

Tweissi said that developing the communication and media capacities of young people, especially in media literacy, would enable them to develop critical and analytical thinking and to distinguish good content from bad content in digital media. This will also enable them to participate positively in media content and counter extremist and racist ideas, which is the basis of the training workshops implemented by the JMI.

As part of the project, the JMI has also designed and developed three training curricula in media and information literacy, which include an introduction to media and information literacy (understanding contemporary media), news media literacy (eradicating news illiteracy), and digital media literacy.

The JMI and Ministry of Youth signed an agreement in February within the efforts of the partners to raise the awareness of youth, develop their capacities, and improve the methods by which they handle media and modern means of communication. These efforts also aim at enabling youth to possess the tools that would help them access media messages and information, analyze and assess them, and produce and participate in content.
This program was implemented by the JMI in cooperation with the Ministry of Youth and the GIZ, with the support of the EU.
