Amman - The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) has recently organized a seminar entitled “Children who are Victims of Family breakdown” in Zarqa in efforts to raise public awareness about protection issues concerning children.<br />

The event is the third in a series of seminars held in cooperation with UNICEF as part of “Enhancing the Quality of Media Coverage of Child Protection from Violence Issues” project and “My Color, My Balloon” activities.<br />

<span dir="LTR">Head of the Family Protection Department at the Ministry of Social Development, Mahmoud Jbour, said the ministry dealt with 860 children in protection and foster homes, 63% of whom were victims of family breakdown. A total of 183 of these were reintegrated with their parents or relatives, 37 of whom receive around JD150 a month through a UNICEF-funded project. Success stories of child reintegration were also highlighted during the event.</span><br />

<span dir="LTR">On media coverage of cases where child victims - who are more vulnerable to suicide, violence, and crime, Akeed’s Editor Aya Khawaldeh, said that journalists are chiefly interested in getting the scoop. She also noted that publishing the names of offenders or victims represents a violation of the dignity and privacy of the children and families involved. Journalists should adhere to professional journalistic standards and ethics, and look into the root causes of the problem as well as prevention mechanisms and remedies instead, added Khawaldeh. </span><br />

<span dir="LTR">A fourth seminar on “The Role of Community Initiatives in Protecting Children from Violence” is scheduled to take place in Aqaba next Saturday.</span><br />
