Jordan Media Institute Wins International Media and Information Literacy Award

Amman - Jordan Media Institute (JMI) won second prize of UNESCO’s Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL) Awards for 2018. UNESCO made the announcement today during the opening of Global Media and Information Literacy Week in Kaunas, Lithuania.

The award came in recognition of JMI’s exemplary work in and ongoing commitment to MIL. The institute has made huge efforts over the past four years, actively engaging decision makers in advocating for MIL. JMI has also been working with different local and international partners, to promote MIL skills and competencies at schools and universities and among youth and communities, in addition to its media credibility monitor and fact check program akeed.jo.

JMI Dean, Dr. Basim Tweissi said the award acknowledges Jordan’s excellence and leadership in the Arab world on MIL, noting that the institute implemented several related projects in cooperation with different organizations including the ministries of education and youth as well as universities and schools. He explained that JMI carried out tens of workshops in Jordan and the region and developed MIL textbook for universities, school syllabus, manuals on news and digital literacy, as well as key documents that provided guidelines for policymakers and academic community.

JMI is the second Arab institution to win the GAPMIL prize which is awarded by a committee of 15 MIL experts and practitioners from around the world. The 2015 prize went to Media and Digital Literacy Academy of the American University of Beirut.
