Amman -  Jordan Media Institute (JMI), in cooperation with the Forum of Federations – Canada, organized a training workshop on dealing with the media that targeted established women leaders from across the Jordan.

The training is part of “Empowering Women for Leadership Roles in the MENA Region” project, aimed at enhancing trainee capacities in dealing with the media and further their understanding of governance systems.

A total of 16 leading women took part in the training, where they learned about the way the media functions. They also received training on how to check news sources and how to prepare for TV interviews, with various interviewing models presented. Additionally, practical training was also offered using the TV studio at the JMI.

JMI Dean, Dr. Basim Tweisi said the institute has develop a policy for supporting gender equality in the media. He noted that, over the last ten years, the institute has issued many research papers and studies that focused on the sensitivity of the media vis-à-vis women’s issues. Within “Maidan” project, the JMI also helped launch “khabirat Al-Ordun” platform, an online directory of women experts in various fields, Tweise added.

Director of “Empowering Women for Leadership Roles in the MENA Region” in Jordan, Sawsan Taweel, said the Forum of Federations seeks to build partnerships with local institutions in Jordan in order to support the implementation of this project. The project is designed to enhance the capacities of women to engage in leadership roles and governance processes, she explained. This is in addition to extending support to women and men to influence policies related to gender equality and inclusive governance, noted Taweel.

Former Member of Parliament, Salma Al-Rabadi, who participated in the workshop, praised the training saying it was useful for women leaders who deal with the media on daily. The workshop is critical given that, currently, people rely on social media - rather than traditional media – for news and information, explained the ex-MP.

It is worth noting that this is the first workshop organized under the project. Other workshops are scheduled to take place targeting the Lower House General Secretariat, women MPs and journalists. The training will focus on covering news pertaining to women MPs in the Lower House.
