​Interactive Training Workshop on Covering Children's Issues at JMI

<strong>8 April 2018&nbsp;</strong><br /> <br /> Amman - The Jordan Media Institute (JMI), with the support of the United Nations Children&#39;s Fund (UNICEF), held an interactive training workshop on covering children&#39;s issues titled &quot;Enhancing Quality of Press Coverage of Protecting Children From Violence in Jordan&quot;.&nbsp;<br /> <br /> The three-day workshop aims at training the participants on how to cover news related to children&#39;s rights and protecting them from all kinds of violence to promote the best interests of children in line with professional standards and ethics of international media. The participants will be able to use advanced tools to highlight children&#39;s issues and protect them from verbal and physical abuse.<br /> <br /> Saad Hattar, a trainer at the workshop, said that the workshop targets youth with moderate experiences to give them tools to handle news stories that have to do with children in terms of balance, fairness, conducting interviews, and protecting their privacy, morally and physically.<br /> <br /> Hattar added that the workshop aims at training the participants on using neutral language that does not bear any stigma and not involving children in news stories that could have psychological effects on them or their families. He said: &quot;We should always focus on journalistic ethics in approaching stories related to children&quot;.<br /> <br /> Ruqayya Qallab, a participant in the workshop, said that the workshop enabled her to handle sources correctly and taught her how to treat children in news stories and build these stories and the aspects that should be avoided in the coverage.<br /> <br /> It is to be noted that 15 journalists from Amman and the governorates of Karak and Zarqa are taking part in the workshop. Their professional experiences do not exceed five years in different media outlets.
