1 May 2018

Amman - The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) and the Ministry of Youth launched a project for capacity building of youth in handling media (media literacy), in cooperation with the GIZ and EU. The project includes the implementation of 22 training programs throughout the governorates of the Kingdom.

The project aims at training 440 young people, aged 16-25, who are members of youth centers, on understanding contemporary communication and media and eradicating news and digital illiteracy.

Dr. Basim Tweissi, dean of the JMI, said that the JMI is seeking to develop the communication and media capacities of Jordanian youth in all governorates. This will help them develop critical and analytical thinking of media content and contribute positively to the content produced by digital media. He pointed out that studies indicate that Jordanian young people spend around 5 hours every day checking digital media.

The project is within the framework of the effort of partners to raise the awareness of youth, build their capacities, and improve methods of handling media outlets and modern means of communication. It is also meant to enable them to possess the tools that would help them access media messages and information, analyze and assess it, and generate content.

The JMI has developed the capacities of a national team of trainers in this field. Training programs are implemented at 22 youth centers throughout the Kingdom.

The JMI and the Ministry of Youth signed an agreement in February to enable youth to counter extremism and distorted media messages and to educate the participants about the ethics of publishing and verification of news on social media and websites.
