Amman -- Mothers of students at Aisha Umm al Momineen School in Amman have stressed the importance of the concepts and skills they learned in the field of handling and assessing media messages and the need for these concepts to reach every family and for study plans at schools and universities to highlight them.

This came during an awareness-raising session for the families of female students of the school on the concepts of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as part of the MIL project conducted by the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) in its pilot phase, in partnership with UNESCO and with the support of the EU, at a number of schools in the Kingdom through the media clubs in these schools and as part of the Support to Media in Jordan project.

Muna al-Natshah called for incorporating MIL into the curricula of the Ministry of Education to eradicate the digital illiteracy of all students and guide them toward the best consumption and use of new media outlets, based on correct and sound foundations. Randa Farouk and Khitam al-Baba said that today's meeting drew their attention to the need for examining news before sending it to relatives and friends because it could be fabricated and aimed at deception and harming the country or certain persons.

During the meeting, which was attended by school principal Widad Wishah and Dr. Nilly Al-Banna from the Jordan Education Initiative, Bayan Tal, director of the project, underlined the need for making a distinction between news and opinion, and rumor and fact, on the part of this category of students, which includes the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. She said that MIL is based on how to access information and media messages and analyze and assess them and produce information and messages and take part in them.

Abdullah Kafawin, project specialist at JMI, presented the technical aspect and examples of fabricated news and pictures. He also spoke about safe browsing and searching, stressing that awareness is the main method for protecting children and youth.

A discussion took place on being alert to what media messages contain in terms of framing, stereotypes, hate speech, violence, and extremism.

At the end of the session, which is within a series of meetings held by the JMI to spread awareness about MIL, the school principal honored the students taking part in the MIL club in the school by handing out token gifts and certificates of appreciation to them.

It is worth noting that the JMI has started receiving applications for the MA program in Journalism and New Media for the year 2017/2018 until 6 July.
