Amman-- The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) conducted a training workshop for building the capacities of local radios to produce radio variety shows "lifestyle," in partnership with the Support to Media in Jordan program, implemented by UNESCO with funding from the EU. The two-day training workshop is in implementation of the JMI plan, launched in 2016, to build the capacities of workers and volunteers at seven community radios in the governorates of the Kingdom that are taking part in the project on "building the capacities of local radios."

Nihad Jariri, director of the project, said that the workshop introduced a new type of programs "lifestyle" to the participants, requiring different skills. She added that "lifestyle" means everything about life; for example, family, professional, personal, and community relations. It also discusses money and time management, food, health, trips, culture, life experiences, environment, agriculture, and fashion.

According to Jariri, the workshop aimed at promoting creativity on the part of trainees when producing this type of programs. She said: We notice that the topics discussed on our radios always have to do with a "problem" or "issue," but in this workshop, the participants got to know a new model of "lifestyle" programs.

Jariri added that the workshop sought to enable the participants to acquire skills of how to choose topics and look for information and sources, besides building the structure of the "lifestyle" show in minutes through group work and as part of a team that includes the producer, announcer, sound technician, and chief editor.

The workshop included practical exercises. The participants were divided into groups, each of which produced a 15-minute segment of a variety show. Recording was done at the JMI studio.

Since the beginning of 2017, the JMI has carried out a number of training workshops and programs throughout the governorates of the Kingdom on producing field radio reports and preparing and presenting newscasts, besides radio morning shows. This is part of its comprehensive training plan, which is based on an assessment study conducted by a team of experts. The aim is for the local and community radios to actually benefit from the training and for this to reflect on their performance. This is done through developing the capacities of workers at these radios. Around 150 people are expected to benefit from the training programs.

The courses proposed within the plan include a number of key topics, such as radio field reports, morning shows, news, documentaries, variety shows, and others.

The targeted radios are Sawt Al Aqaba, Sawt Al Janub, Sawt Al Karak, Tafila Technical Radio, University of Jordan, Liqa FM/Zarqa, and Yarmouk FM/Irbid.
