Jordan Media Institute (JMI) exchange student Mona Abu Hamour received a diploma in Development Journalism from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), in the Indian capital of New Delhi, after 4 months of training and intensive workshops.

Abu Hamour shared and presented information about the Jordanian media scene, and the role that journalists play in the development and in addressing issues that touch people’s lives. She participated in the program with 23 other students from 20 countries around the world, who specialized in the fields of journalism, audiovisual media, and public relations. During the training, participants studied a number of development problems facing a range of different communities and environments and learned about best practices in covering them and engaging with the nuances of each situation.

Abu Hamour says that her biggest takeaway from this experience is that “journalism can’t be segmented. Development journalism covers politics, culture, and social life holistically, and it touches on all the details,” adding that this type of journalism “must adopt an issue and defend it.”

JMI and IIMC have an academic cooperation agreement, and for many years JMI has sent one to two students annually to the institute for training and to gain experience and skills in the field of development journalism, which aims to address the challenges facing societies taking into account their cultures, population densities, and needs. This cooperation agreement is a part of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme run by India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

JMI nominates qualified students who meet the application requirements for training opportunities in media, academic, and research institutions, both regionally and across the globe. These opportunities allow students to hone the abilities they acquire through JMI’s master’s program in Journalism and New Media, and apply and practice them in a professional environment that is diverse and multicultural. Throughout the past 10 cohorts, most of JMI’s students and graduates have participated in fellowship and training programs abroad, as well as academic trips to institutions that provide opportunities to practice and apply the highest professional and ethical standards.
