Amman, 21 February (Jordan Media Institute) -- A training workshop on capacity building of local radios for preparing and presenting newscasts was concluded at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) yesterday. The JMI conducted the workshop in partnership with UNESCO, with the support of the EU. The training workshop is part of the JMI's plan, launched in 2016, to build the capacities of workers and volunteers at seven community radios in the governorates of the Kingdom that are taking part in the project on "Building Capacities of Local Radios."

The two-day training workshop aimed at enabling the participants to develop their skills in producing radio newscasts in a professional and innovative manner that focuses on local news. Nihad Jariri, director of the project, said that at the conclusion of their training workshop, the participants discussed with trainer Hasan Rawashdah, journalist and anchor at the Turkish channel TRT, the newscasts that they produced at the JMI studio.

She added that the workshop included applied exercises. The participants took intensive applied training, which resulted in producing and presenting newscasts. This is in addition to the theoretical aspect by learning about the criteria for selecting news and its importance, how to acquire the skill of writing news for radio, sound performance, and radio journalists' ability to master the skill of using sound techniques within the newscast and sound bites.

The JMI has drafted a training plan for building the capacities of workers at seven community radios taking part in the project on "Capacity Building for Local Radios" in accordance with an assessment study conducted by a team of experts. The aim is for the community radios to actually benefit from the training and for this to reflect on their performance. This is done through developing the capacities of the staff at these radios. Around 150 people are expected to benefit from the program.

The courses proposed within the plan include a number of key topics, such as field radio reports, morning shows, news, documentaries, variety shows, and others.

The targeted radios are Sawt Al Aqaba, Sawt Al Janub, Sawt Al Karak, Tafila Technical Radio, University of Jordan, Liqa FM, and Yarmouk FM.
