The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) has launched a training plan for capacity building of staff at seven community radios taking part in the project "Capacity Building of Local Radios," implemented by JMI in partnership with UNESCO and supported by the EU.

Dr. Basim Tweissi, dean of JMI, said today that this plan, which was developed based on an assessment study conducted by a team of experts, emanated from the idea that it is necessary to provide concrete benefit for the community radios. This has to reflect on their performance through developing the capacities of their staff. The study showed that they are full of energy and have great potential and promising artistic talents.

He added that the study aimed at producing a clear list of training fields that these radios need. These will be turned into training programs in the coming period, which will harmonize the previous training needs with those required by the plan to develop content and produce programs.

He said that the study, which was based on orientation and assessment visits, practical sessions, and discussion workshops with the staff, showed the need of most workers at the target radios for developing their capacity to verify information, demonstrate diversity and creativity when doing reports and conducting interviews with high quality and great professionalism, and maintain correctness of language. In addition, announcers need to develop their capacities in terms of editing, specialized writing, and adopting balanced, ethical editorial decisions.

The proposed courses based on the plan, according to Dr. Tweissi, include a number of key topics, such as radio reports, preparing and presenting morning shows, news, documentary programs, entertainment shows, voice focus and presentation skills, investigative radio features, recording and editing software, broadcast management, social media networks for radio staff, and managing volunteers. Around 160 persons are expected to benefit from the training programs.

The target radios include Sawt Al Aqaba, Sawt Al Janub, Sawt Al Karak, Tafila Technical University Radio, University of Jordan, Liqa FM, and Yarmouk FM.
