The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) organized a focus workshop at Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, in cooperation with UNESCO and the European Union, on evaluating the performance of local radios in the southern governorates. The workshop was attended by representatives of local community organizations and directors of the radios targeted by the project "Building Capacities of Local Radios in Jordan." These include Sawt Al Janub Radio, Sawt Al Aqaba Radio, Sawt Al Karak Radio, and Tafila Technical University Radio.
Nihad Al Jariri, director of the project, said that the aim of the workshop was to come up with recommendations related to capacity building of local radios. These recommendations will be used as a basis for designing a training program to develop the skills of individuals working at radios and develop radio content by producing new programs or developing programs within the current schedule of radios.
The participants reviewed the key challenges and difficulties facing the target radios, including broadcasting problems, technical and material support, seeking the help of volunteers, problems of electronic connection, selecting and producing programs, and developing news. They also discussed the concerns of radios that lead to defects in their work. They underlined the special characteristic that these radios must have since they target a close community of listeners and they need to address their issues, meet their needs, and communicate their concerns to officials.
The project "Building Capacities of Local Radios in Jordan" is carried out by JMI, with the support of UNESCO and the European Union. It includes four stages, which begin with evaluating individuals and content, followed by the training stage based on the outputs of the first stage, besides setting up internal regulations at every radio to determine its professional and editorial terms of reference. This is in addition to producing new programs at every radio station and two joint programs with the other radios taking part in the project. Ultimately, the aim is to create an organizational framework that brings together the radios contributing to the project.
