Amman, 5 December (Jordan Media Institute) -- In a meeting that brought together members of the team working on the national strategy for population-related media today, Dr. Basim Tweissi, dean of the Jordan Media Institute (JMI), affirmed that Jordan, in light of the demographic challenges facing it, needs a national strategy and new vision for population-related media to be adopted by the Higher Population Council. This vision should be translated into a plan of action and implemented in cooperation with partners and stakeholders.
During the meeting, which is part of efforts to develop a national strategy for population-related media implemented by JMI, in cooperation with Tawasol, Jordan Communication, Advocacy and Policy Project (JCAP), and the Higher Population Council, Tweissi said that since 2004, Jordan has been facing demographic challenges. These include the fact that the population of Jordan has doubled. Jordan has also received the largest wave of refugees in half a century. Besides, it has become involved with the "demographic opportunity," which will change the age structure. Therefore, there is a pressing need for developing scientific foundations so that population-related media would focus on its effective role professionally to address and avoid any drawbacks resulting from these challenges.
The team will take specific steps based on a timetable. The first step will be to analyze the current situation and take note of the media studies, demographic opportunity, and what has been written in Jordan on the topic of population-related media over the past 10 years, besides reviewing some successful international experiences in this field.
