Jordan Media Institute (JMI) completed a training program in mobile journalism for its Eleventh intake of students in its master’s program in Journalism and New Media focusing on photography and video editing. This was part of a program to enhance the skills of a new generation of journalists in Jordan, in order to develop their abilities in support of press freedoms and the freedom of expression, in cooperation with the Norwegian Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Twenty-four students were trained in an intensive, week-long program on photography, video editing, and the preparation of video journalism materials using mobile phones. In the process, they developed the necessary skills to use mobile phones in the production of news reports and stories and to make a plan to prepare full reports in the field, focusing on the fundamental elements of speed, precision, objectivity, and neutrality.

During the training program, the students also produced a set of reports that took into account more technical aspects, such as camera settings; the size, duration, and angle of shots; and the methods to process the results on smartphones. These methods are changing and developing every day, especially with the recent advancement of technology specialized in the preparation and publication of videos through social media.

Student Haya al-Da’ija said that she was not convinced that it was possible to produce a complete report that is ready for publication via mobile phone alone, but after practicing the tools provided to take and edit pictures and footage, she was able to produce a complete photojournalism story from her phone. This, she said, would simplify and speed up the process of producing materials, especially those that would be shared on social media.

Student Rand al-Shayab reflected that she had long been interested in producing short, concise promotional videos for her photo stories, in order to share them on the social media site Instagram, explaining that she has been able to use the skills she acquired during the course for this purpose.

JMI offers its students the most important tools and skills to make journalism as accurate and compelling as possible, while abiding by professional ethics and standards, throughout its intensive, year-long master’s program in Journalism and New Media.

JMI is receiving applications to its master’s program for the 2020/2021 academic year through its website or at its campus until July 2nd. Partial scholarships are offered to all admitted students. For more information, please contact 00962 (6) 5713304 or visit https://www.jmi.edu.jo/
