Amman, April 28th 2013

Today marked the launch of cooperation on a human rights media training project between the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) and the German Embassy in Amman.

In a press release issued by the German Embassy, the project will provide training for 15 journalists on Human Rights Reporting and will equip participants with tools and skills to investigate and report on human rights breaches and corruption issues. The workshop will also include supervised field work by participants.

Today’s press conference at JMI was attended by HRH Princess Rym Ali, JMI Founder, and HE German Ambassador Dr Ralf Tarraf and a number of local media representatives. HRH Princess Rym welcomed the cooperation and said that it would contribute to raising awareness on human rights issues and the essential skills needed for reporting in making our society a better informed one. She further added that journalists should have the right of access to accurate information thus helping society make better informed decisions.

German Ambassador Dr. Tarraf asserted that Journalists have an important role to play in reporting on human rights and corruption issues and in “creating public awareness and a responsible debate on the issue.”

The first part of the project will include a three day training workshop entitled: “Reporting on Human Rights” which will commence on Saturday May 4th 2013.

The training will include topics on fact finding and verification of information. The last day of the training will include designing work methodologies.

The participant will then reconvene for the second part of the workshop which will focus on field work evaluation, and the legal aspects of the Journalistic fact finding and verification methods, under the supervision of a field expert.
