Amman, (JMI) -- An analytical study has shown that the Jordanian daily press contributed to the creation of an image that has a security character around the city of Maan linked to the security crises and incidents that the city had witnessed. The study, titled "Image of City of Maan in Jordanian Press: Analytical Study of Content of Coverage of Local Crises," conducted by Ahmad al-Ajlouni and debated at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) for the purpose of receiving the MA degree, noted that media coverage by the sampled newspapers before the period of the security incidents totaled 2.95% of their total coverage of other governorates with the exception of the capital. During the security incidents, this coverage totaled 13.05% and declined after the incidents to 9.04%.
The study, supervised by JMI Dean Dr. Basim Tweissi, revealed that some opinion writers in some newspapers contributed to the creation of this image around the city through exaggeration and unrealistic description of the incidents.
The study said that Jordanian newspapers should devote attention, based on a consistent pattern, to Jordanian cities and should diversify their coverage as much as possible to include many aspects, and not focus on a particular aspect. It also asked newspapers to use their reporters in the field as sources of news material because they are aware of aspects that might be overlooked by people who write the news from afar. They should also listen to citizens as much as possible and use multiple sources.
The researcher said that he had analyzed the news content of the Jordanian press in its coverage of the incidents in Maan during the crises of November 2002 and May 2013. He chose to explore the image of the city of Maan in the Jordanian media, especially during the period of the incidents, in view of the existence of a complicated relationship between the different media and incidents in the city of Maan. The evidence of this is the different coverage of these crises in several outlets and the great variation in the coverage between one outlet and another. Content analysis of two samples of daily newspapers was conducted.
