Child Rights Media Award “Learning for All” – 2015

Award Brief and Objectives:

The award, themed “Learning for All” in 2015, aimed to engage the media sector in raising awareness about the importance of quality and inclusive education for all children, especially vulnerable groups, at a time of regional conflict that has put millions of children at risk.

Standards for Evaluating Entries:

• The focus is on children’s right to education.
• The reporting is accurate, responsible and ethical.
• The story incorporates the voices of the children and those directly affected.
• The report shows individual initiative that highlights the theme of Learning for All.
• The article was published in a print or electronic media outlet between 2014 and 2015. Unpublished stories that address the topic of the award will also be considered.
• The report is in Arabic or English.
• The stories are between 700 and 1,000 words long.
• Clarity of narrative.

Award:

One-week internship at the BBC for writers of the three best stories.

Winners:

• Nadine Al Nimri from Al Ghad Newspaper for her report: 96,000 Syrian Refugee Children in Jordan Outside Schools.
• Barakat Al Zyoud from the Jordanian News Agency, Petra, for his report: Disabled Certainly Does Not Describe Omar.
• Muath Freij from The Jordan Times for his English report entitled: Temporary Schools for a Hopefully Temporary Situation: Young Syrian Refugees Find the Right People to help them keep dreaming.
