Amman – In cooperation with the Forum of Federations – Canada, the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) organized a three-day training workshop for the Lower House’s General Secretariat on “Spokesperson” Skills and Governance.
Eight employees from various divisions of the Lower House of Representatives, including the media and social media sections, Unit for Cooperation with Civil Society Organizations, and the Parliamentary Blocks Secretariat took part in the training.
It is worth noting that this is the second workshop organized as part of “Empowering Women for Leadership Roles in the MENA Region” project that is supported by the Forum and the Canadian government.
The Forum’s representative in Jordan Sawsan Taweel stressed the importance of the project which aims to support the image of women leaders in the media. She also spoke about the Forum’s ambition to expand through partnering with institutions including the JMI.
Through its MENA project, the Forum seeks to empower women through strengthening their capacity to engage in leadership roles and governance processes.
JMI Projects Officer Tareq Bakri said the training “focused on dealing with the media and preparing for TV and press interviews. It also covered governance, gender-sensitive issues, as well as best media practices in covering gender issues".
On the practical side, the training included practical exercises inside the JMI TV studio. Participants also reviewed interviews broadcast by local, regional, and international stations aimed at highlighting the successes and mistakes committed during these interviews, added the official.
Participant Hala Assaf said she learned how to present herself well in media and TV interviews, something that she will apply at work.
Ala’a Nazzal, another participant from the Parliamentary Monitor and Social Media Unit, said the training was a great opportunity for her as she learned how to prepare an interview strategy and specific message. This, she said, will help the unit highlight women’s roles and achievements.
Further training on covering gender and governance issues for women MPs and journalists is scheduled to take place.
