Amman – Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali's Comment on Time Magazine's choice of “the Guardians” as Person of the Year 2018:

"The Jordan Media Institute which was established 10 years ago as a journalism education institution, salutes Time magazine’s initiative to name “the Guardians” as person of the year.

As the Founder of this Institute, I hope that you, our students, be you former graduates or currently enrolled in our Master’s programme also see yourselves as guardians of the truth, because it is the best way to safeguard a healthy society.

At a time when many journalism institutions are coming under fire and being accused of perpetrating so-called fake news, it is crucial to remind ourselves why we need a professional media that asks questions and investigates, and why we also need to build proper media awareness within our society.

We are at a crossroads where I believe all professional journalism education institutions should hold hands and show solidarity, to train new generations of journalists who will continue to work responsibly and to the highest possible professional standards, with integrity and independence, accountable only to the public to which they are bound and whom they seek to inform.

God bless those who lost their lives and those who are currently jailed or facing trial, for doing their jobs as guardians of truth."

Rym Ali, Founder of Jordan Media Institute
