Amman – The Jordan Media Institute (JMI) announced the establishment and registration of the “Jordan Local and Community Radios’ Association” which consists of five local radios; Jordan University Radio (JUFM), Sout Eljanoub Radio, Voice of Aqaba Radio, Sawt Alkarak Radio and Yarmouk University Radio (YUFM).

The Association is Jordan’s first joint institutional self-regulating structure of local and community radio stations in the country where licensed radio stations, universities, media institutes and establishments that have a radio station are eligible to join. Also eligible to join are private institutions, civil society organizations and media professionals – provided they are not registered as an association.

JMI Dean, Dr. Basim Tweissi, stated that “the Association came as part of the support for media in Jordan, which is done in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the European Union (EU),” noting that JMI facilitated the procedures, developed a vision governing the Association’s work, and provided the location for the Association’s headquarter at its permanent location in Amman.

The Association aims to promote and regulate the common interests of community radio stations, develop radio work and enhance the performance of its employees in compliance with the media principles and the national development’s requirements, to implement joint projects that further develop local radio stations, to exchange programs and broadcasting materials, as well as to development joint radio productions and boost the technical, engineering and training expertise.

The Association has been officially registered with the Ministry of Culture where Ms. Nihad Jariri was elected as its President and Luai Ahmed as its Secretary.
