Executive summary of the annual report 2018

This is the fifth annual report prepared by the institute’s administration, which began issuing annual reports since 2014. This report includes five core areas of the institute’s work: the academic field, training and capacity building, projects and research, institutional framework, resources, and sustainability.

The report provides a follow-up to the achievements and evaluation of the Institute's work during the year 2018 in the five mentioned areas, in addition to comparisons between performance indicators over the years, and cumulative information in each of the areas covered by the report.

The Institute has achieved a qualitative leap during this year in all fields, whether in academic achievement, in projects and training, or in the institutional framework, and this reflects the volume of work estimated to grow in spending and entered the institute for the average of the last four years, which confirms that the volume of work in the process of continuous accumulation, and comes This is amid difficult and complicated circumstances in similar institutions, including educational or non-profit institutions working in the media and development sector, where funding is declining, scarcity of new opportunities and changing priorities of international donors.

This report comes with the beginning of the implementation of the second strategic plan of the Institute 2018-2021, which is concerned with moving the institute from the establishment and development stage to the stage of excellence.

 

First: the academic field

In the academic field (the Master’s Program in Journalism and New Media), the report provides a review of the most important developments in the educational process at the institute during this year, the most prominent of which is the continuation of the application of the quality policy, which largely reflected the reputation and status of the institute by improving the level of students admitted to the institute and improving standards The process of competition and the level of examinations is evident from the quality of students in the last two years. As is the case in improving the level and quality of the educational process, this can be measured by several indicators, including increasing the organization of the applied side in the school subjects. As in improving the level of graduation projects, and ensuring their conformity with the evidence prepared for this purpose, master's thesis prepared by thesis track students also achieved an important presence on the media and academic arenas, given the quality of its subjects and the quality of its preparation.

This year (2018) witnessed the graduation of the ninth cohort, where the total number of graduates reached (31) male and female students from the path of Al-Shamel and the message, and the institute received (38) students in the tenth batch; of them (29) in the path of the comprehensive and (9) in the path of the message And the institute maintained a competitive level among students.

At the level of academic performance, students maintained a very good level in academic achievement results. The students also maintained a commitment to attend the required proportions, as well as the application side was set and developed in most of the study subjects where clear instructions were issued regulating this matter, and the work was also done on the website of the Institute students (journalists) where work was confined to the internal network and in the second semester It was output to work on the external network.

The total of master’s theses that were discussed during this year (4) master’s theses, after they passed all academic and administrative procedures, and students during this year prepared (21) graduation projects, all of which passed the required standards. Also, during this year (30) student activities were implemented, which varied between lectures, workshops, and training programs, in addition to the participation of (12) students in foreign student exchange programs that included Lebanon and Austria.

The number of graduates of the institute until the ninth cohort reached (213) male and female students, of whom (81.22%) are Jordanian and about (18.87%) of Arab nationalities, and there are (49.66%) males compared to (50.23%) females. The database of the Institute's graduates, which was developed in 2018 and is constantly updated, states that (91.08%) of the Institute's graduates have obtained jobs, there are a group of graduates (4.23%) who complete a study in PhD programs and (4.69%) did not get jobs.

 

Second: The field of projects and research

The institute has implemented 10 projects in the field of media and communication with a number of international and local partners. These projects included the continuation of media and information education initiatives, where the institute implemented a media education project directed at young people in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Youth and funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation and the European Union, and the institute also implemented a project to qualify workers in the Ifta department in the field of dealing with the media, and implemented projects in Press coverage of economic and financial affairs in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Cooperation and the Embassy of the United States of America, as well as a project to develop quality press coverage for children's issues in cooperation with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

 

Third: The field of training

In the field of training and capacity building, the Institute's work in these areas has witnessed a major development, although most of the training takes place through projects and not through direct training, the Institute organized (55) training programs that benefited about (1,027) participants during the year 2018 compared to (50) ) Training program that benefited about (1500) participants in the year 2017 and (20) training programs that benefited (379) participants in 2016. The Institute's external work in this field has expanded, as it has implemented training programs in Mauritania, Algeria and the United Arab Emirates.

 

Fourth: The institutional framework

The library was supported during 2018 with a group of books and scientific references specialized in the fields of communication, media, and journalism, and the institute was also supported during this year with the equipment required to serve applied education from computers and cameras. Personnel time monitors were also purchased, and the Institute's fire and safety system were completed.

 

Fifth: Resources and sustainability

The Institute has been able to maintain the quality of operations in various educational and training fields and in project management and implementation, which has given it a more positive reputation. The institute is still facing challenges in the areas of financing consistent with being a non-profit organization, this report has made clear that bridging the financing gap and increasing the ability to face financial crises is linked to the optimal investment of available assets that are still not invested efficiently as is the case in the high operating spending on outputs Limited in the field of educational programs.
