18 February 2015

Renowned Danish television journalist and director Torbe Schou held four days of workshops at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) from 15to 18 February, 2015 for the comprehensive and thesis students. The students were actively engaged throughout the session which focused on storytelling and the best and most creative approaches to television news reporting.

Schou, who has 25 years of broadcast media experience, said that the workshop was his first in the Middle East, adding that while he was aware of the cultural differences, JMI students were very similar to the scores of journalists he trained in Europe. They all have the same enthusiasm for work and like to tell stories, he added.

The sessions were organized by the Norwegian Institute of Journalism (IJ) whose executive director Frode Rekve was also involved in the sessions and shared his experience in radio with the students. Rekve, who has been supporting JMI for the past three years, was very pleased with the students’ interaction with the Schou. He said such exchanges help increase cultural understanding between nations and highlight how similar people are.

Schou told the students to focus on ordinary people in their stories and get their views as well as natural sound. Shoot for the eye, aim for the heart, he said. He showed them his most challenging and impressive news reports, prompting one student to thank him for making her aware of the sounds and little details in her life.
