JMI - Amman

JMI is continuing to offer its MA Journalism and New Media students online distance learning so as not to interrupt their education during the coronavirus (COVID-19) quarantine.

Students in both the Comprehensive Examination and Thesis tracks are distance learning by attending live streams of lectures that are broadcast over specialized platforms to sustain their education, in order to preserve the students’ right to continue their academic tracks as well as protect them from the coronavirus.

Interactive online material was prepared by JMI faculty in anticipation of the decision to temporarily close universities, training centers, and academic institutions. The material was distributed and implemented soon after the Prime Ministry’s announcement of the suspension.

The Institute, with its advanced infrastructure and facilities, provides the appropriate tools to continue holistic communication with its students from a distance, providing MA students with their curriculum and with specialized academic resources directly through several outlets.

JMI Dean Ziad Rifai confirmed that the students’ education is continuing uninterrupted and without any delays, owing to contingency plans prepared in advance for similar situations and relying on its JMI’s skilled team of employees and equipment. Rifai added that JMI’s role as an academic institution that aims to improve communication skills shines through in situations like these, in which facts and the ability to effectively communicate information is crucial in solving a crisis.

Rifai points to the team at Akeed, the Jordanian Media Credibility Monitor, which continuously verifies information and traces rumors that are published in Jordanian media. They produce content that he says limits the spread of false information and raises awareness, fulfilling one of the main roles of a professional, socially responsible journalist. In turn, the Institute’s efforts in developing the skills of journalists to produce professional content work towards developing and maintaining necessary transparency and trust between civilians and the authorities that attempt to end crises with the least possible damage.
