Amman – In cooperation with the Forum of Federations and with the support of the Canadian Government, the Jordan Media Institute (JMI) held a workshop entitled "News Storytelling from a Gender and Governance Perspective" for starting to medium career-level journalists.

Attended by 19 participants from various local media outlets, the workshop covered many topics including the relationship between media and gender, the concept of governance and its implementations, the elements of news storytelling and its verification methods, in addition to the process of conducting advocacy campaigns through practical applications which were carried out by the participants under the guidance of the trainers.

Her Royal Highness Princess Reem Ali, who attended part of the workshop, expressed her enthusiasm for the new ideas presented by the participants and for their determination to inspire change. HRH pointed out that the importance of the workshop doesn’t only lie in informing the trainees about the relationship between media and gender, but reaches beyond that to cover all aspects of human rights; something which a professional journalist must adhere to when reporting news.

Gender advisor and trainer, Sawsan Gharaibeh, referred to the workshop’s gender-balanced participation and praised the diversity of the trainees who represented various governorates of the kingdom. Gharaibeh also referred to the participants’ aspiration to bring positive change into their communities, adding that the workshop focused on the importance of bridging the gender gap and on employing effective solutions to improve gender-related issues and to produce stereotype-free content.

Participant Ibrahim Sahouri highlighted the importance of such workshops in explaining gender concepts and in clarifying gender-related issues which are put into practice within news storytelling. Sahouri pointed out that the workshop focused on providing useful tools, important terms and practical samples derived from the international press and implemented through applications carried out by the participants themselves.

The workshop, which lasted for three days, came within a project implemented by JMI and in cooperation with the Forum of Federations - Canada. A similar workshop, held for experienced journalists, was held within the same framework last week.
