Amman – An intensive training for journalists was launched at the Jordan Media Institute (JMI), engaging 50 practicing journalists with a diversity of experiences in covering women’s issues in all Jordanian media. Through the partnership with UN Women, and with the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), JMI will work with a selected group of media professionals to change the way women and gender-related issues are portraited on media outlets and to develop positive stories on women, particularly in the world of work.

Traditional and new forms of media have a wide influence in promoting an enabling environment for women’s economic empowerment among the public. As such, this initiative aims to further raise awareness on gender-sensitive reporting in media coverage, building the competencies of the journalists in challenging gendered stereotypes in the labor market through their work, while applying gender lens in reporting on gender-based violence and producing gender-sensitized media content..

With the objective of developing journalists’ knowledge, skills and capacities, the training covers fundamental topics aimed at promoting gender-responsive reporting on women’s socio-economic role in the society, including key women’s empowerment concepts, as well as how to address stereotypical and gender-bias approaches to media and communication. The training will also cover issues related to fact-checking, source verification, authentication of visuals, ethics in reporting, media publishing legislation, press freedoms and gender equality.
